Grow Your Own Food Year Round with a Greenhouse
Here in the Northeast we can’t even think about planting vegetables outside until mid May, when the danger of frost has passed. Luckily there are ways to extend the growing season and one thing that we have been seriously looking into are garden greenhouses. Luckily there are many greenhouses available to fit not just about any budget but even the smallest of spaces as well.
Can vegetables really be grown year round in a greenhouse? Yes and no. Where winters are especially harsh the greenhouse would have to be heated to maintain temperatures needed to grow vegetables. However, even if we choose not to grow our vegetables year round we can start earlier and extend our current growing season well into mid fall.
For homes that don’t have a lot of outdoor living space a lean to greenhouse is a great choice. Lean to greenhouses come in all shapes and sizes and, like the name suggests are designed to learn against other structures. Lean to greenhouses can be placed on a patio or deck and even leaned up against a shed. They come in a variety of styles which means they also blend with pretty much any decor.
For the part time gardener with even less space a cold frame greenhouse is a great choice. These greenhouses are on a much smaller scale and work great in the smallest of spaces. Cold frame greenhouses are also very affordable, with many costing less than $100.
Growing vegetables instead of buying can save families a lot of money, and using a greenhouse is also a great way to start plants from seeds instead of paying more for plants. If you are looking to save money then consider starting your own garden this spring. And if you are really serious about saving money by extending the growing season then a greenhouse can be a very wise investment.
