Household Budgeting Part 1
If you find yourself in a situation where you’re spending more than you make, it’s probably time to look at what you’re spending your money on. When you do, you may find out that that you need to tweak your household budgeting.
Groceries
When it comes to household budgeting groceries can be a major expense, depending on how many people live in your house. This is especially true when the price of everything is rising on a weekly basis. Here are a few ways to cut back on groceries:
1. Plan your meals and make a grocery list from the meal plan. This way, you buy only what you need.
2. Buy in bulk, when possible. Bulk is usually cheaper than buying in small packages.
3. Use coupons whenever possible but pay attention. Sometimes the store brand is still cheaper.
Heating and Cooling Costs
Though heating and cooling costs are expensive, there are ways to cut down on how much you spend. It may save only a few dollars a month, but those dollars do add up. Here are a few household budgeting tips to keep costs down.
Heating costs
A lot of cold seeps through your windows and doors during the winter. The more cold that comes in, the harder your heater has to work to stay at the set temperature. You can cut down on the amount of cold that comes in by using these two tips:
1. Heavy drapes - you can use these during the winter to block the cold.
2. Make or purchase draft stoppers to put in front of the doors leading to the outside to keep the cold air out.
Cooling costs
Keeping your house cool in the summer can be as hard as keeping it warm in the winter, but you can do a few things to help your air conditioner:
1. Use a few lamps instead of direct, overhead lighting.
2. Use slatted or Venetian blinds. You can direct the sunlight upwards, leaving the lower level of the room cool.
3. Keep all unnecessary appliances turned off. Every appliance that you have turned on produces heat. By keeping the unneeded appliances off, the house won’t get as warm and the air conditioner won’t work as hard.
Household Budgeting By Going Green
Everyone has heard of “going green”, but there are some major benefits to doing just that. Green, or energy efficient, appliances are everywhere, and cover a variety of uses. For instance, not only can you get a washer or dryer that’s energy efficient, air conditioners, refrigerators and hot water heaters are available. Next time you have to replace an appliance, look into these energy efficient options. Most people pay up to 40% less on their utilities by using these products.
Using these tips are a good start in helping you with your household budgeting. While they won’t give instant results, it may take as little as a month or two to notice a difference.
